My writing space. A blog, if you will, on what I learn from the school of life.
What if we, as professionals, could achieve perfection? Writing the perfect copy, capturing the perfect image, editing the perfect clip—all these are now possible with the help of AI. The same AI also edited these lines in case I made mistakes in a language that isn't my first.
Although technology may make perfection attainable, remember that practice makes perfect—but not new. Original ideas emerge from mess and chaos, from breaking down and rebuilding, from viewing the old in a new way. Strive for excellence, but don't make it your ultimate goal. Perfection can drain the soul; leave it for the soulless. Stay inspired. Keep inspiring. P.S. Inspired by Adam Grant and his book Originals. If both the teacher and the student rely on AI for teaching and completing work, what role does the human play?
We, humans, are always going to choose the easy way, but there are occasions where tension is all that matters. In the classroom and at work when we solve problems that matter we should always opt for tension. We should seek it, not waste time on things that don't matter or that can be handled by machinery alone. Stay inspired. Keep inspiring. Some people think the AIs could potentially hurt us. Some tech founders wrote an open letter saying they are worried about the progress of their own inventions, fueling the worries of everyone else. But are the AIs the comfortable distraction from the bigger problem of how big companies hurt us and the environment?
Organisations such as oil or consumer goods companies, have gained a lot of power and control over us. They may have had good intentions once but now they seem to care only about making their stakeholders happy. They don’t care about how they hurt us and the planet. The Exxon memo in the Carbon Almanac (p. 46) shows how the company knew that burning oil causes climate change since the 1970s, but they did not stop. We should not let technological inventions scare us. They may help us figure out new solutions to the real problem of climate change. We need to be mindful of how we grant power, no matter if to humans or technology. We should hold those with power responsible too. We need to use our power and our voice as people and customers. We need to understand that our lives depend on the planet being healthy. But most of all - we should make sure our focus remains intact. As Alanis Obomsawim said: When the last tree is cut, the last fish is caught, and the last river is polluted; when to breathe the air is sickening, you will realize, too late, that wealth is not in bank accounts and that you can’t eat money. Stay inspired. Keep inspiring. Seth Godin recently shared that there is generative AI trained on his blog. That's 20 years of daily work and thoughts shared, making chatting with that AI pretty close to talking to the man.
Marketers are already using AI to speak in the voice of specific audiences. And we all know these are the first steps towards conversing with tech as if it was person X. I can imagine instances when I would enjoy this privilege. For example, chatting with my dad who is no longer among us. And I can imagine it moving to regular phone conversation soon too. But no matter how much better digital copies become, they will never be able to give us the warmth or spontaneity of a single human being. Appreciate these developments. But don't substitute the imperfect but real humans for their perfect digital counterparts. Stay inspired. Keep inspiring. |
