My writing space. A blog, if you will, on what I learn from the school of life.
Each situation requires us to choose which part of ourselves we will reveal and which we will hide.
This doesn't make us fake, unaware, or unhappy about the ways we define ourselves. It makes us professional and selfless. But first, we need to know all our personalities well and love them all. Stay inspired. Keep inspiring. In a world where everyone seems to value authenticity, let's remember that it can be a trap. Those who want to know us in an authentic way are likely to be our friends and family. But at work, the request is different.
We are expected to show our interpretation of professionalism. It is understood that our expression may differ, and that is acceptable as long as we do not deviate too far from the norms. Once our version is deemed within the limits of the system, it is often labelled as authentic. A version of professional authenticity is showing up without makeup and a hairdo (for women), or coming to the office in jeans and a t-shirt for a CEO. Professional authenticity does not allow showing up in a foul mood or speaking our truth, as one might do with friends and family. Let's stop asking people to be their authentic selves when we don't actually want that. Instead, let us encourage professional authenticity, and both sides will benefit. Stay inspired. Keep inspiring. She had heard the rumours that she was going to lose her job to someone better — someone that everyone seemed to both love and hate. She was skilled at what she did, but what made her stand out was the heart and love she poured into her work. However, there were always better people out there. That she knew.
She couldn’t understand the fear of the others though. ‘After all’, she thought, ‘if I don’t measure up, I’d let myself go too. But if I am given a chance, I’d love to stay and learn from that someone better.’ As it turned out, her x-factor could not be so easily replaced, and she had her chance to learn a lot. She had tamed the tech, which wasn’t looking for a crown, but a queen to please. Stay inspired. Keep inspiring. |
